Aluminum for artificial legs
Dr. Supat Wangwongwattana, Director General of The Pollution Control Department, Bangkok said that the Department and the Prostheses Foundation of H.R.H. the Princess Mother, together with the Hua Hin municipality school and the municipality under the lead of Mr. Jira Pongphaiboon, the mayor, are collecting aluminum such as the can ring tabs and others in order to turn them into artificial legs to be given to amputees of underprivileged persons
Hua Hin municipality school, Baan Nong Plub School, Pak Nam Pran Wittaya School and Sam Roi Yod School, among others have had their students collect the materials and hand it over to The Pollution Control Department. The total amount of the material adds up to 8 tons. The school that gathered the biggest amount was Boh Fai municipality school with which the Department has awarded 30,000 Baht along with an award to encourage them to bring in more material in the future. The more the Department gets aluminum, the more they can help the amputees to be able to buy the artificial legs for much lower price than the imported ones from abroad.
Dr. Supat added that from 2003-2008, the Department, Bangkok Can Co., Ltd and many schools throughout the country have handed over aluminum waste to the Prostheses Foundation in the total amount of 993.36 tons. The material has been turned into artificial legs and sold at price 700 Baht. Imported artificial legs cost 10,000 Baht. This is true benefit and contribution to those who need them.
Therefore, people who drink beverages from aluminum cans should collect the ring tabs and hand them over to the municipality officers or to any school in Hua Hin. The act will virtually help out the amputees.
Mr. Jira Pongphaiboon, the mayor and executive members of the municipality have admired Boh Fai municipality school for their successful work that brings fame to the District.
Schools will continue to be encouraged to collect aluminum material for this project. Other organizations, hotels, houses, entertainment centers, Thai and foreign residents are requested to be committed to this action and donate the aluminum waste to the municipality.
