Did you remember your helmet?
Hua Hin is as many other cities in Thailand packed with motorbikes. The vast majority drivers are of course Thais, but more and more foreigners, either living here or holidaymakers, are taking the two-stroke steel horses to heart. Surprisingly most people prefer to drive without a helmet even though everyone is aware of the sudden death should you hit the ground at even slow speeds.
The police enforce the law stating that everyone driving a motorbike needs to wear a helmet. They have checkpoints around town, and sometimes they even change their routines and stop you where you would least expect it.
But, most of the times, they are using the same checkpoints and the locals have learned to navigate around these checkpoints. If you get caught at one of these checkpoints you will be fined 200 baht to be paid at the Hua Hin Police Station. The police officer will keep your ID/Drivers License until you return with a receipt of payment.
To us as foreigners 200 baht is not the world, and we usually pay it with a smile. The only annoying thing is the hassle of the trip to the police station and also the possible queue there. Note, in Hua Hin the law requires that the driver of the motorbike wears a helmet, and the maximum people allowed on a motorbike are 2. In other cities, fx Pattaya, everyone on a motorbike is required to wear a helmet.
My question to you, dear reader; Are you wearing a helmet when driving a motorbike? Place your answer to the right in the poll.
