Homage to Barry Daniels , Painter
It is since December 2007, that I have known Barry Daniels and that our friendship, loaded with a certain complicity, because he entrusted his concern in painting to me, especially never having been able to expose in Thailand, since the 7 years that he lived in Hua Hin. The last exposistion went back to 1996 in London, where he was born. He obtained many awards at the time of his career as a painter.
We also spoke much about other arts, but especially about music. He particularly liked Chet Baker and Ella Fitzgerald in the jazz scene, but also loved classical music. By looking through his workshop and his abstract paintings in Khao Takiab, I could quite simply discover an extremely cultivated man with a very fine spirit and observant liking of life. He was also frustrated never to have been able to expose his works in Thailand and asked me to help him.
I was obliged to hold my promise and I contacted Daniel Humair, a long time friend in Europe, an abstract painter celebrity and musician of very high level jazz who immediately promised his assistance in the best possible way in Europe.
Our history of collaboration started later in May this year and I contacted influential people in Thailand and a General Manager of a five star Hotel to organize expositions next year in Hua Hin, Bangkok and Chiang May.
In his workshop in Khao Takiab, hundreds paintings are exposed.
We met regularly to establish our plan to organize the expositions.
When relaxing with a cup of coffee, on 15th August, Barry Daniels told me that we would have to proceed with a vernisage no matter what it takes.
I encouraged him that our history of friendship was only a start.
His brush never stopped moving and new creations were always at hand.
We plan vernisages for March and June of the next year together with the with the Hua Hin and Chiang May Jazz Festival and Bangkok later.
As the dates and the places became increasingly fixed, I saw in his face a light of life and he me an asked me for a date of the first exposition.
Was going to announce on August 23, 2008 the very good news to him to expose at Hua Hin in a five star Hotel and saw him on the 18th of August and he bought new material for the projects in the Center of Hua Hin. He had so much energy for new things. He wanted change his house into a Gallery in the next weeks to promote his work and prepare for future expositions.
He left us on August 20, 2008 abruptly, mysteriously leaving a lot of questions open.
I knew him as a respectful, cordial and generous man with much charm and a stamp of typical British humor who lived with discretion and a certain timidity in the loneliness of his world of painting, which was his. We lost a great artist, a humble human of a great simplicity and kindness.
I leave the choice to the professionals to pay homage to him in his career in as a gifted painter.
Barry Daniels is an example of a respectful, simple human being among humanity. A big friend will always remain in our memory. Our sincere condolences are with his close relations and his family.
Barry leaves hundreds of Paintings behind. He entrusted Rene Marugg again, some days before his death, also to organize an exhibition. I promised him to organize an exhibition without any financial interests. We tried to contact his family but all endeavors’ were in vain. What happens to his work now, is not known.
