The Deputy Mayor answers questions from Residents
We asked Khun Suvit to tell us a little about his background and his ambitions.
“I was born in Bangkok and after primary school; I attended the Suan Kulab School, Bangkok’s first primary school. In 1973 I graduated from the Kasetart University where I majored in Scientific Agriculture. I was offered a job by the Dole Company in the greater Hua Hin Area where I supervised pineapple farming, ensuring that the quality of produce was up to set standards. After a long period of employment, I decided to take things into my own hands and started a construction material supplying company as an entrepreneur.
We specialized in concrete pre- cast products and were very successful.
Now I have more time to dedicate myself to municipal issues and my favorite sport Golf. In 2007, I was invited by the present Governor to join his team, going for elections the following year. We won the elections and now since 4 months, I am honored with the task given to me which I will tackle with the best of my knowledge.”
Residents’ questions
What can the Municipality do to improve the environmental situation in Hua Hin with regards to the garbage problem, the beach access problem, keep the beach clean and further environmental influences?
Khun Suvit answered
“We are very much aware of the increasing issues concerning waste, especially on the beaches and in the rural areas in Hua Hin. First of all, we are encouraged by the cooperation with the Hotels to keep the beach clean. Each hotel along the beach takes responsibility for a certain beach area and hold a regular clean up. With the hotels we deploy a “Keep Hua Hin Clean action which up to now has been successful. Our beaches are a lot cleaner. We are now looking into the random restaurants on the beach and their impact on the Resorts. We are redesigning the restaurant areas, adding waste water collection and toilet areas.
In general we are increasing the overall waste water re-cycling capacities to contribute towards water supply in Hua Hin. We are separating waste in organic and inorganic quantities, glass, plastic, metals and household oils. This is already practiced by many main resorts in our area.
We have asked the electric company to burry cables underground on our main roads as already done in some developments in Hua Hin. As you can see, we are trying hard but need the support of all residents, may they be Thai or foreign to keep Hua Hin clean and contribute towards environmental responsibilities.
The roads in Hua Hin are very congested on weekends with a lot of wild parking by transport entrepreneurs, leaving little space for visitors.
Khun Suvit answered
“We know this is a big problem. Unfortunately there is little parking space in Hua Hin center and our public transport and the traditional Tuk Tuks are part of our culture enabling transportation to those not coming by car. We will take action in this issue in due time as we will find other logistic solutions for through traffic.”
Some visitors have suggested closing the Naresdamri road from a certain time on during the early afternoon until midnight, making it a walking road. Hotels, Restaurants and Shops could be given the morning until 11:00 to receive their supplies.
Busses and cars delivering guests to the Hilton have a free passage. By doing so, the Tourists will be grateful and so will the environment as less traffic is expelling toxic gasses in the air and into our lungs.
Khun Suvit answered
"This sounds like a splendid idea. I would propose this to our municipality at our next meeting. In addition I would love to close the road from the Railway Station to the Beach past Sofitel, clear the passage way to the beach to make the beach more attractive upon approach.
Why can’t police enforce traffic rules ? It seems that the fine for driving on the wrong side of the road or wearing no helmet is not enough to scare motorbikes off.
Khun Suvit answered
“It is a bad thing and may accidents happen because of this. You must understand that the profession of policeman is not a highly paid job. That is why we do not have enough staff at the police stations as you could read in last month’s Hua Hin Today. Also this issue is part of our campaign.”
Two months ago the municipality announced that the Klong would be cleaned over a length of more that 20 Km. Residents have noticed that nothing has been done as yet.
Khun Suvit answered
“In order to do the whole action as planned , cleaning – Making a concrete canal, requires a lot of money. We estimate the total cost to be approx. 170 Million Baht. This money has to be borrowed from the Central Government or The King’s Foundation.
These funds must be paid back so we have to plan carefully to ensure that the attractiveness of Hua Hin as a Tourist Destination but also as a place to invest in housing and small industry will eventually be able to finance such projects.”
Khun Suvit, you have revealed some of the plans of the municipality with regard to Hua Hin, it’s reputation and attractiveness as a top tourist destination. Again, thank you for your time and open interview.
Hua Hin Today would like to encourage all its residents to contribute towards a more attractive municipality, a top holiday destination.
