Playing golf in Hua Hin – A beginner’s view

A first time visitor to Hua Hin will quickly notice that Hua Hin has quite a few golf courses and most of them are of world class quality, designed and played by professionals. At the moment Hua Hin has 8 running golf courses and most of them located in the outskirts of Hua Hin, as a golf course take up a big piece of land. One thing is clear though, beginner or professional, Hua Hin has something to offer for all.

Basic golf information
A golf course comprises of 9, 18 or 27 holes. Each hole is rated as a par 3, 4, 5 or 6. This means that you have 3, 4, 5 or 6 swings to get the ball in the hole. If you use 4 swings at a par 4 hole, this means you reach the score of “par” on that hole. 1 swing under gives you a “Birdy”. 2 swings under gives you an “Eagle”. Get the ball in the hole in the first try, earns you the famous score “Hole in One”.
As a beginner, your will probably get used to terms like “Bogey” and “Double Bogey” which means 1 swing/2 swings more than the par on that hole.
There are a lot more terms to golf and it takes some time to learn them all, so we recommend you to visit sites like http://golf.about.com/od/rulesofgolf/a/golfrules.htm for more information.

Never played golf before, but would like to start?
When watching others playing golf, or watching golf in TV, golf seems like a very easy sport to play, but actually just hitting the small ball in the first place can be a difficult task to begin with. It takes time and practice to master all those clubs in your bag, so it is recommended to start out easy and with the help of a professional teaching you how to stand and swing.
A good place to start is at a driving range where you get the opportunity to train your swing. All the golf courses in Hua Hin have driving ranges, but if you would like to “just swing” then we recommend the “Pamai Driving” range here in Hua Hin. Located just 5 minutes from the centre of Hua Hin, it is the ideal place to start out as a rookie.
