The Chiang Mai Challenge 2008
The Tourism Authority of Thailand and Active Management Asia Co., Ltd. are pleased to announce the inaugural Chiang Mai Challenge 2008.
Scheduled for Sunday, May 18, this three to eight hours wilderness adventure race, will take teams of two through a 35 to 50k course of running, mountain biking, swimming and paddling.
After the tremendous success of the last River Kwai Trophy that attracted 120 teams from all over the world, the next event of the Amazing Adventure Race series promises to bring some fun and excitement in the Rose of the North.
The playground is definitely narrower than the other places we organize our Adventure Races says Serge Henkens, Amazing Thailand Adventure Race Series Manager.” Located between the 700 years stadium, the Doi Suthep Mountain and Mae Rim, the course will include a variety of short and fast sections. The race will be totally different of what we have seen in Nong Chok or Kanchanaburi. We always try to create something different, to surprise the competitors says Davy Debryn, the logistics coordinator. What we can say is that it will be a lively and fast race. We can’t tell much more at this stage. The racers will find out on the race day!

The race will start and finish at the 700 years stadium and a lot of activities will take place at the Huey Tung Tao reservoir says Henkens. We would like to make this race a social event and invite all Chiang Mai residents to come and support all the athletes! Adventure Racing is so spectacular! I would be pleased to use the sport and Adventure Racing in particular to enjoy a fun and festive day with the population of Chiang Mai!
“In the last few years we have seen adventure racing grow in popularity, with more and more
people looking to get into the sport,” says Henkens. The River Kwai Trophy in Kanchanaburi, also part of the Amazing Adventure Race series, is now the second largest Adventure Race in Asia after the Action Asia Hong Kong Challenge.
“Anyone with a minimum fitness level can participate. So come and try it, you won’t regret it. But beware, Adventure Racing is the most addictive sport you will ever try, and once you get sucked in, there's no going back.”
The race is open to anyone 16 years of age or older and each team must consist of two athletes.

Adventure racing is the fastest growing sport in the world and Active Management Asia is leading that growth in Thailand with its incredibly popular races and corporate training programmes. Now in its third year of operation, Active Management Asia has established an international reputation for solid logistics and challenging race courses. These non-stop races, ranging in length from 4-8hours, require teams to run, trek, mountain bike and paddle, while navigating an unmarked course through the wilderness. Likened to an expedition with a stopwatch, adventure racing requires teamwork, perseverance, strong navigation and wilderness survival skills.
